Sexual Addiction-Trauma

Treatment for Sexual Addiction-Trauma includes individual, group, couples, and intensive counseling in conjunction with a twelve-step group. Often, clients who have a sexual addiction also have other addictions; therefore, we treat the interaction of multiple addictions. Clients learn about the spiritual, emotional, and neurochemical basis for addiction in a supportive environment, surrounded by others who understand the struggle, because they have been there themselves.

Regardless of the type of addiction, unresolved trauma is often at the heart of the addiction process. We define unresolved trauma as any event that left the client feeling overwhelmed and disempowered. Until the event is resolved in an empowering manner, the addiction is used as medication for the client’s pain. Therefore, we treat the trauma while simultaneously addressing the process of the addiction.

Clients establish sobriety and build a toolbox to prevent relapse. The outcome is a new vision for life, sexuality, and relationships. Clients leave with a new resolve and a practical plan for recovery.

Treatment for sexual addiction includes the following:

  • Work with a collaborative professional team for precise treatment planning and systematic goal tracking
  • Participate in a 3-pronged assessment approach that screens for causes, patterns, and co-occurring issues
  • Receive treatment for the mind, body, spirit, and relational patterns

Treatment Phase 1: Group & Couples Intensives

The healing journey for a client recovering from sexual addiction begins with participation in a specialized group counseling experience called an “intensive” which is led by a certified sex addiction therapist and a licensed counselor and held in Chicago or Evanston. Group Intensives take place in groups of at least 5 clients and Couples Intensives take place in groups of 3-5 couples, unless a workshop format is utilized.

Treatment Phase 2: Individual & Couples Counseling

The second phase of sexual addiction treatment begins with individual counseling to help the client develop a deeper understanding of the recovery process with the support of a therapist. If the client has a partner, it is recommended that the pair begin regular couples counseling to work on relationship recovery and then build intimacy.

Insideout Living’s couples work draws from neuroscience and attachment theory in order to help couples create relationships that are both secure and well-functioning. Couples engage in a series of exercises designed to help identify each partner’s attachment style, improve the ability read the partner’s body language and arousal states, and help the couple better manage conflicts. A Couples Intensive can also occur in phase two of treatment.

Treatment Phase 3: Group Counseling

After a couple completes Part 1 and Part 2 of the Couples Intensive, it is recommended that the couple join a therapy group with the other couples who participated in the intensive. Group exercises continue to establish safety, trust, and connection with other couples during the intimacy-building process.
