(Another Freakin’ Growth Opportunity)
That’s me (the therapist) in the orange dress; the client is in the pink. Ever been in session with a client, you’re well connected, insightful & you’re absolutely amazed & awe struck as you listen to your client put the scattered pieces of the puzzle of their life together? On the outside you’re nodding your head, you’re trying to hold the tears back as you witness this sacred suspended 50 minutes in time. Deep down at the core, both of you have an infallible knowing that there has been a breakthrough. That somehow all of your client’s public & private struggles in a particular area have merged into a change that is transformative & their countenance is different. In this place, they have let go & surrendered to a greater power. A power greater than the “problem”. In what seems like a nano second there’s an epiphany! The problem has become precious, more precious than a rare jewel. The problem is now clearly recognized as the oyster shell, that doesn’t look like much on the outside, in fact in some cases kind of ugly, but within at just the right time a pearl is revealed. As the oyster grows in size, its shell must also grow. The formation of a natural pearl begins when a foreign substance slips into the oyster between the mantle and the shell, which irritates the mantle. It’s kind of like the oyster getting a splinter. The oyster’s natural reaction is to cover up that irritant to protect itself. The mantle covers the irritant with layers of the same nacre substance that is used to create the shell. This eventually forms a pearl.
In other words there’s a process that most of us experience, that often gets pretty messy. Day in & day out I witness in the lives of my clients, trusting the process, sometimes slipping & sliding & if they stay with it, if I’m really lucky I’m around to witness the emergence of the pearl that has been steadily forming. Right about that time & through the process, I’m suddenly hurled by an AFGO (another freakin’ growth opportunity). A call to growth, a reminder of what my higher power has brought me from, a challenge to walk the walk, a whisper that says; “come on, you’ve put this or that off long enough.” Those are the times that if I could be seen from the inside out, I’d look like the lady above in the yellow dress.
Stay tuned for the next AFGO……..
